Managing our health through Covid-19

It is an unprecedented time that we are living in. Life is so hectic and we all are often guilty of burning the candle at both ends. Work, family, social and lifestyle demands drains all of our resources. Often it will leave us feeling exhausted and fatigued. Now the entire world is in the grips of a pandemic. Although here in New Zealand we seem to be reasonably well protected and literally isolated from the terrible sickness and death that this novel virus is wrecking on the planet, we are not immune from the stress and consequential health disturbances it causes.

Covid-19 is affecting every one of us in some fashion. Every thing that we do has been impacted. Social isolation was a huge challenge for the population during the level four lock down, and still there are many vulnerable groups of our community who are feeling lonely and isolated. Now with the country in level two restrictions, we have relative freedom, yet there is still many families left reeling with job losses, financial insecurity and children and family members scarred with anxiety and insecurities.

The old cliche saying of 'worry only about what you can control' is as true now as it has ever been. And a very important part of our lives that we can control is supporting our health and well being through good nutrition, movement, good quality sleep and practice mindfulness.

When we treat ourselves well with foods rich in nutrients and that are replete with all of the goodies our bodies need to thrive, we can fight off illness and stress induced fatigue far more effectively. Throw in moving around for at least 30 minutes a day, getting some much needed VitD from the sunshine where possible (sun safe of course), along with getting plenty of sleep we give ourselves the best chance of coping with whatever life in the Covid era has to throw at us.

Pick up the phone and call those who are needing contact. Be kind to each other and then we actually create an awesome community that cares for each other.
